The Back Story

Trust Thamesmead has long held an ambition to create a range of high quality community facilities that will improve the lives and opportunities for local people and to help make Thamesmead a place where people increasingly choose to live. Sporting Club Thamesmead is going a long way to turn ambition into reality.

Thanks to the support of two key funders, and the support of the Trust’s Board, this ambition has taken a major step towards realisation with the opening of Sporting Club Thamesmead.

Sporting Club Thamesmead offers a range of sporting activities, social and community facilities, as well as improving the enjoyment of being involved with Thamesmead Town Football Club, which is also based at here. TTFC were promoted to the Ryman Premier league at the end of the 2012-2013 season.

Sporting Club Thamesmead is working in partnership with TTFC to deliver a detailed football development programme, enabling participation and progression in football by all sections of the local community whilst establishing the club as Thamesmead’s leading community sports club. Our partnership with TTFC also means that we can offer local children the opportunity to access activities at a ‘real’ football ground, inspiring and motivating them to take part and be the best they can be.

Facilities include grass football pitches for all levels, a full size floodlit Artificial Grass Pitch, Multi Use Games Area, indoor multi-activity space, changing rooms, a sorts café bar and other function rooms. Activities on offer include football, basketball, netball, hockey, martial arts, dance, yoga, community functions and events. The Club building and the layout of the outdoor facilities have been designed to reinforce the open nature of the site from a visitors’ perspective and minimise the impact of the built form on the land. The design philosophy is that where possible the building should ‘touch this earth lightly’, creating minimal impact and allowing the building to be appreciated as part of and not simply placed on the land.
